Job Summary
The Veterinarian will be responsible for the overall health maintenance of the entire colony. Portions of the day-to-day activity may be delegated to technical staff, but the Veterinarian must adequately monitor this delegated activity and function as a team leader. The Veterinarian must have a high level of clinical skills. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring full compliance with all regulatory aspects of research animal care and use and will be the contact person with the various regulatory agencies. A part of this requirement involves being a member of, and fully participating in the activities of, the Animal Care Committee. The Veterinarian must have a sound understanding of the scope and principles of all research activities carried out by Transpharmation and be able to identify potential challenges in the planning stages and report these to the relevant Scientific Director. The Veterinarian must ensure that the research integrity is not compromised by animal handling, use and welfare issues during the execution of the research. The incumbent will be required to perform technical procedures as a part of the research. The Veterinarian is responsible for ensuring, either directly or by delegation, that all veterinary related equipment is functional and available when required. From time to time it will be expected that the Veterinarian will develop new skills or technical expertise as the scope of the Transpharmation research enterprise evolves.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for animal welfare at all Transpharmation animal facilities
Working with animals such as cats, dogs, and rodents
Provide a timely response to electronic requests for advice regarding sick animals
Ensure that Transpharmation is compliant with all regulations and guidelines that relate to animal welfare
Act as contact person for communications regarding the Ontario Animals for Research Act, Canadian Council for Animal Care and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation for Laboratory Animal Care
Involved in research trials with a strong emphasis on animal health
Recording, analyzing, and reporting results of tests and procedures, often utilizing computer programs
Coordinating and conducting research tests and procedures
Must understand the nature of the trials being conducted by Transpharmation
Training research personnel
Ensuring adherence to test protocols and assisting in performing test procedures as necessary
Conducting and recording appropriate Quality Control checks according to the Quality Assurance Program
Performing regular expiry date checks of all veterinary drugs
Be aware of the responsibilities of the Research Technician Level I, II, III and IV
Fully competent in all general techniques of veterinary medicine include routine surgical procedures and gross necropsy procedures
Training of staff on all procedures as appropriate
Perform regular internal proficiency testing of research technicians
Requirements:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
License in good standing to practice in Ontario
Commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine and upholding veterinary code of ethics
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and to meet timelines
Ability to work in a safe environment
Good verbal and written communication skills
Experience working with rodents in a research environment is an asset
